Kathy, an alto and retired change management consultant, has joined the ranks of married couples currently singing with the Long Beach Chorale. She and her husband Joe joined us during last season for the Dona Nobis Pacem concert.
Kathy has an extensive background in music, having sung in choirs from the tender age of five. She earned a degree in music education from Michigan State University, with a major in voice and minor in piano. She has directed several choirs, taught voice and piano privately, and taught vocal music at Hartnell Community College in Salinas, California. She plays piano, guitar, and recorder. Her favorite types of music to listen to include solo piano, and symphonies and creative new works in the classical canon.
Outside the realm of music, Kathy has taken a new interest in cycling. “After accompanying my husband as support crew on a cross-country bicycling trip last year, I just bought my own bike and am beginning to cycle myself,” she says. “The last time I did much biking was about 50 years ago.” Her other hobbies include knitting, reading, gardening, and blogging about cooking with local foods.
Singing with the chorale is deeply meaningful, Kathy says. “Using my voice creatively is a spiritual experience for me. It connects me to the energy and life of a creator spirit. Doing it with others augments the experience and helps bring an even stronger sense of unity and oneness,” she says.
