Meet tenor Nathan Staph: Bear Fighter

Nathan StaphNathan Staph is a valued member of the tenor section. He is a talented cinematographer and video editor — he and his friend Michael Kroh produced the promotional video for the chorale’s Dona Nobis Pacem concert last season.Nathan studied music at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California, where Long Beach Chorale’s Artistic Director Eliza Rubenstein was his choir director.

His favorite piece the chorale has performed is Dave Brubeck’s arrangement of the Christmas carol We Three Kings. Singing with the chorale provides Nathan with a unique artistic environment, he says. “It’s a place where I can express myself as well as take in thoughts, ideas, beauty, and passion that I would never be exposed to elsewhere,” he says. “Oh, and it’s really, really, really fun.”

In his spare time, Nathan juggles, kayaks, plays the videogame Call of Duty, and eats

quesadillas. His favorite musical acts include Radiohead, Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, Midlake, Band of Horses, and Billie Holiday. Like many chorale members, he is a fan of Los Angeles-area classical music radio station KUSC. He also enjoys barbershop quartets. One of his life goals is to fight a bear. “I don’t wanna kill it, but I’d just like to see if I could win,” he explains.
